How We Serve
Dear Monthly Chick Leader,
Thank you so much for volunteering with the Springfield Chicks! We love spending time with the women and children at the Sojourn Shelter . Our community is blessed to have women with so many talents willing to step forward and show love, hope and support to the girls. Without you, we truly believe this program would not be the wonderful blessing it is to so many. The word thank you is just not enough.
Here are a few general guidelines for leading a Chicktime Springfield month at Sojourn Shelter.
-You will need to provide approximately one 1 hour workshop and dinner. Dinner can be a crock pot meal or casserole, salad or fruit, and a roll for example. You are also welcome to recruit a local restaurant to donate food. The women do a lot of group cooking at the shelter, so having the recipe printed for the meal you serve might be a nice extra for them to have.
-Once you decide the program you will provide, call Fallon Achas (217) 899-4514 to discuss your ideas. She will let you know if your ideas are appropriate for Sojourn. The staff at Sojourn knows our desire to bring new experiences – both fun and educational – into the lives of the women and children so be as creative as you like.
-The Sojourn clients we serve are all women at this time and their children are between the ages of 0-17 so you would want to incorporate something fun and interesting for all ages (or we can plan to split the young kids and adults into separate groups). For the younger children, you are welcome to bring a friend who can take them to another room to play or out to the playground, you do not need to come up with a special program for the little ones… but you are welcome to. There can be up to a total of 32 women/children who may be in attendance for your event, plus volunteers. Fallon will contact the shelter to get more specific numbers before your activity. You must make preparations for all, providing enough materials for all to participate. We will discuss this ahead of time, while planning your event, so you know how many to prepare. -You are responsible to fund all materials for your programs and all food for your meals. If you need fundraising advice and support, please contact Fallon Achas. You do not have to figure it all out on your own, we will help! No idea is too big or too small for the Springfield Chicks. So if you have a great idea, run it by us, don’t think its too crazy or wonder if the women and children will like it. We love seeing the women and children try something new. If you have a passion for what you are doing, you will bring everyone in the room on board with you. We promise!

-You are responsible to bring any skill specific volunteers needed to facilitate your programs and to provide the dinner.
Here is an example of how a typical event would look:
Chicktime Chapter Leader – Will be there to help activity leader get in and get settled and kick off the event.
Activity Leader – Designs event for the month. Selects and coordinates meal, plans and leads activity, brings in volunteers from your circle to make event a success!
Volunteer needs – We plan that each session could use the following:
3-5 volunteers to help with the activity. (For example, if it is skill specific like knitting, yoga or zumba these volunteers would be comfortable with those)
1-2 volunteer for the younger kids
1 volunteer to stay with dinner and set everything out by 6:20
-Chicktime is building a base of volunteers to help with the kiddos and meals. If you need help in those areas, let us know and we will help you get that squared away.
-Additional volunteers will join us during the monthly program, but they will serve as mentors enjoying time with the women and children. You may bring additional volunteers to come and “play”, in addition to your program facilitators.
-Once Fallon has the information for your event, she will generate an invitation to the event and send it out to our database to our regular volunteers. You are encouraged to send the invitation to your circle of friends and family as well as print them off and distribute to your community if you desire. Please encourage your friends to fill out our web form and sign up to join Chicktime Springfield so they can be included in future events and help build our volunteer base. Simply click the join a chapter button located on of every page at Chicktime.com to open the web form. Make sure to select IL-Springfield from the drop down menu.
What to Wear:
-We typically wear jeans, capris/long shorts and Chicktime t-shirts. We will have the Chicktime t-shirts available prior to each Chicktime event. They are available to you for a $20 donation. We do encourage everyone to get one because it helps spread the word about Chicktime! 100% of the money goes to our programs at Sojourn. This is how we raise money for special projects. If you do not have a Chicktime shirt, please wear a modest top that shows no cleavage, and shirts that stay tucked in and do not ride above the waist when bending over. We also suggest that you do not wear designer clothes or excessive jewelry. This helps the women and children relate to us better and does not make them feel “small”. Our goal is to blend with the women and make them feel part of our community. Thank you for respecting these clothing boundaries.
4:30-5pm Volunteer meet up in kitchen
6:20-7pm Dinner Together
-Cameras are allowed with special permission, NO pictures of the Sojourn client’s faces are allowed to be taken at any time.
This is such a fun and powerful way for women’s groups, mom’s groups and friend circles to get together and serve! Thank you for saying, YES, when asked to facilitate a month. You have chosen to be the hands and feet of Jesus by blessing these women and children with your love.
